Fat Transfer
About Fat Transfer

Fat transfer, also known as fat grafting or fat injection, is a surgical procedure commonly performed in plastic surgery. It involves the transfer of fat from one area of the body to another to add volume, enhance contours, or improve overall appearance. Here’s how the procedure typically works:
- Harvesting Fat: The surgeon begins by identifying an area of the body with excess fat that can be used as a donor site. Common donor sites include the abdomen, thighs, buttocks, or flanks. Through a minimally invasive liposuction technique, fat cells are extracted from the donor site.
- Purification and Processing: Once harvested, the fat cells are processed to remove impurities, excess fluids, and damaged cells. This purification step helps ensure that only healthy fat cells are used for transfer.
- Injection: The purified fat cells are then injected into the target area requiring enhancement or volume restoration. Common areas for fat
4. transfer include the face (for facial rejuvenation), breasts (for augmentation or reconstruction), buttocks (for augmentation, often referred to as a Brazilian Butt Lift), and hands (for rejuvenation).
5. Sculpting and Shaping: The surgeon meticulously injects the fat cells in multiple layers to achieve the desired volume and contour. Careful attention is paid to ensure natural-looking results and symmetry.
- Natural Results: Since the transferred fat is derived from the patient’s own body, it tends to integrate well with the surrounding tissues, resulting in natural-looking and long-lasting results.
- Dual Benefit: The procedure provides the dual benefit of contouring the donor site through liposuction while enhancing the target area with fat injection.
- Minimally Invasive: Fat transfer is generally considered a minimally invasive procedure, resulting in shorter recovery times and reduced risk of complications compared to more invasive surgeries.
However, it’s important to note that not all of the transferred fat cells may survive the transfer process. Some degree of reabsorption can occur in the weeks following the procedure, so additional sessions may be necessary to achieve optimal results.
As with any surgical procedure, fat transfer carries potential risks and complications, including infection, uneven contouring, and asymmetry. Patients should consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon to determine if fat transfer is an appropriate option for their aesthetic goals and medical history.
